Many organizations utilize the AWS tagging feature to keep track of costs, projects, or other parameters. Oftentimes, developers will forget to tag an instance launched for development purposes and then forget what its purpose was months later. While I won’t delve into the various policies and processes that companies have to solve this problem, many have settled on requiring every instance to be tagged with specific variables and shutting down the ones that aren’t. Previously a cron script on an EC2 instance, this is a perfect job for Lambda.
