Chapter Seventeen

Fianna. Fianna and hooved feet. A man, a thing with hooved feet.

Something between those two triggers a release within me. Be it the name Fianna or the sight of Garr’s feet, I don’t know, but the name Fianna reverberates in my head over and over again. The hail sounding like that of a desperate boy. A sad and frustrated boy. Could the boy be Garr?

Something feral and ancient climbs the walls of my soul to answer his call. The thing slips through the door Jaden earlier unlocked.

My reaction is instant and automatic, and I don’t know what it means, but I have trouble believing it’s anything good. Garr brings out the worst in me, my inner beast, and I sense myself becoming something unrecognizable in his presence.

Slow, steady steps take him around the bed, closing the distance between us.

Fury oozes from my pores.

I hiss, my vision reddens. “Stay away,” I growl in a distorted voice.

Before I can blink, he pins my wrists to the wall and his body presses against mine. “She took you from me. It wasn’t fair.” His voice rings in my ear, sounding like a pouting child. “Do you remember now? I see Fianna’s temper in you.”

I slam my forehead into his, attempt to break free, but he holds firm. I thought I was supposed to be impossibly strong and yet… my mind shuffles through my options, his potential weaknesses. A millisecond later, I bring my knee up with all my force and connect with my target. He folds, and I shove him away.

Lurching to the side, I move toward the door, wanting to put as much distance between us as possible. His hand grasps my leg before I can get clear. The hold drags and tosses my momentum sideways. I fall to the bed and dig my nails into the mattress. The sharp, razor slashes of claws dig into my skin, followed by the sound of tearing fabric. Blood trickles down my leg prickling my senses, and with a yank from Garr, my nails break, releasing my hold upon the bed.

His hands are heavy and callous, and without a hint of gentleness, he twists me around and throws me back to the bed. He regards me with cold, determined eyes.

“You’re crazy,” I say and spit in his face.

It was a split-second decision on my part, a gut reaction. He sneers and briskly clears my stain with a wipe of his palm, temporarily freeing one of my hands. I swing, nails broken and jagged, aiming for his eye. Three distinct lines traverse his face, warm and wet to the touch. He growls. Smacks me across the cheek. A flash of fire erupts on my skin, and a coppery taste cuts across my lip.

His face contorts, flashes of confusion, frustration, despair, fluttering on and gone. Something about Garr, his response, or temporary emotional state, provokes me. I flex and then relax. Ribbons of power race over the fibers of my being, melting away the tension and fight. Green, thrumming, flashes of light spit and sputter from my worn crystals.
