Oh, my Gaea! “Jaden? Jaden?” I call his name repeatedly, my entire body revving into full alert.
I straddle him and grab his shoulders, shake. Shake hard. The motion reverberates through my limbs, and I tremble. My brain is rattled. My breath hitches and accelerates, attempting to compensate for his all-to-slow breathing.
“Ana,” he mumbles, my name dropping from his lips slow and disjointed.
I drop my ear close to his lips and listen hard. “What’s wrong, Jaden? What’s happened?”
“It will be alright.” His voice is forced and weak. “I am drained.”
I jolt upright. Stifle a scream, a call for help. Would Ry hear me, or would Garr be the one to come running? I wish Ry had Jaden’s ability, wish he knew what I needed and was here with me now.
I jerk to a stand, and with a clenched jaw and fist, peer out at where I expect Ry to stand—in front of his sleeper pod with his arms crossed. He’s not there, and I fight back the tears that want to flow. I don’t know what to do.
Drizzle starts falling from the sky, and there is the slightest scuff of Jaden shifting on the ground behind me. I spin around.
Jaden has his arm outstretched, his palm wide to the falling dew drops. He’s trying to lift his head. “We should get you to shelter before your beautiful new clothes are all wet,” he says, sounding drunk.
Drenched clothing. Soo the least of my worries right now.
I drop beside him and slide my hand behind his head. “Do you think you can move?”
“Sure.”
He rolls to his side and into a sitting position. I help him stand and keep my arm around him for support. We stumble our way down the stairs to the main level. Someone is pounding heavily at the door. I throw the door open. Standing before me is the female guard blocking my path. I ignore her questions and push Jaden and myself past her and head for the bridge.
The guard follows us, even tries to grab Jaden, but I push her away. For all I know, it’s the Treeite’s fault something is wrong with Jaden. I start screaming for my brother as soon as I am close to the bridge. The guard at the other end of the bridge starts making his way toward us. In seconds, we will be trapped, guards on both sides of us. But before the guard can take two steps onto the bridge, he’s pushed against the rope railing and Ry is standing in front of me, glimpsing over Jaden.
“What’s happened?” He takes the burden of Jaden’s weight.
“I don’t know. He was coughing and then started acting funny and collapsed.” I follow Ry and Jaden back across the bridge, the male guard stepping out of our way. “One minute, he seemed fine, and the next…” I wave my hands in the air. “It’s almost like someone slipped him a mickey. Is he going to be alright?”
“I don’t know for certain, but I’m fairly sure he’ll be alright.
