Chapter 19

After returning to her office, Avi opened her left bottom file cabinet desk drawer to pick up the Landon file and examine their portfolio before returning it to Ralph. As she thumbed through the file tabs, her fingers stopped at one labeled ‘keys to desk.’ I know that was not in there this morning. I would never label a file folder in that manner. The type is even a different size and style compared to the other folders. “God what is going on?”

“I am here daughter. Do not be afraid.”

Avi jerked as she heard those words and looked to her right side then all around her. It almost sounded audible again. She picked up the Landon file and checked her purse in the bottom right drawer. Nothing appeared to have been touched.

Avi closed her door and picked up the phone. “Hi Ralph, how soon do you need the Landon file?”

“Friday would be fine, Avi.”

“I’ll have your ducks in the file by then. I also have the lock. May I borrow your screw driver so I can replace it?”

“No need, Avi. I will replace it before I leave. Call if you plan on leaving before me.”

“Thanks Ralph.”

Avi spent the afternoon going over the Landon file, comparing their current portfolio with similar offerings from Kamrowski. It took nearly two hours to find investments which would be beneficial to Landon. As she closed the file, her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID and saw Roger’s name. “Kamrowski Financial, Avi speaking.”

A tired, weak voice answered, “Hi Avi, this is Roger. I stepped out of the ER room to call you. It doesn’t look good. Miriam lost the baby, and now they are fighting to save her life. I don’t know when I will be back. I can’t, I won’t leave Miriam now. They are talking about surgery. I lost my son and now I’m afraid I might lose Miriam, too.”

“Roger, don’t worry. We will cover for you. I am so sorry to hear about the baby. I lost my son when he was six. It still hurts. I wish I knew what to say, but I know there is nothing I can say. Please stay positive for Miriam. Have you eaten yet?”

“No, I don’t want to leave her.”

“What hospital?”

“Shepard Memorial.”

“I’ll stop by with food on my way home.”

“If I’m not in the ER, I’ll be in the surgery waiting room. They are making arrangements now to take her up to the third floor. Avi, if you pray, would you please say a prayer for Miriam? I’m scared. I don’t want to lose her.”

“Yes, Roger. I will. I’ll see you in a couple of hours, and I’ll let Ralph know how things stand.”

“God, please take care of Miriam.”

Avi dialed Ralph and told him about her conversation. Ralph replied, “Avi, I’m coming to your office now. I have my screw driver, and I’ll get that lock on your desk. After that, you leave and take food to Roger. If you can, stay with him until I get there.
