CONGRATULATIONS

HELENA

My little sister is getting married today. She’s going to walk down the aisle toward a man she’s desperately in love with, and the man at the end loves her just as fiercely. I couldn’t be happier for the two of them. I’ve really never seen my sister this happy.

For a while there, I was pretty worried. But she’s really blossoming and coming into her own. I know our dad would be proud.

Despite all this, the majority of my thoughts are overwhelmingly Avery-related. Maybe it’s because he looks so fucking fantastic in that tux. Maybe it’s because I’m still thinking about his head between my legs this morning. Either way, I want him. Bad.

Even now, as I sign off on the catering bill, I’ve got my eyes on him across the room. He’s in a conversation with Monroe, an engaged expression on both their faces. I can’t help but wonder what they’re talking about, and whether or not Avery is thinking of me as much as I’m thinking of him.

When I finish up, I head over to where they’re talking, Avery turning to greet me with a big smile on his face. Monroe is about halfway ready for the day and excuses himself to finish up. Although, it was probably more for our benefit than his.

“Hey you,” I say, running my hands up over his chest.

His arm threads around my waist as he inhales heavily. “Hey there.”

“Having fun yet?” I ask.

“It’s always fun with you,” he says, leaning in to kiss my bare shoulder.

This man makes me sigh. Like for real, out loud sighing. The kind you see in movies during those heartfelt moments. I don’t think that’s ever happened to me before.

“May I ask you a question?” he says.

“Anything,” I say.

“Who were you dating before? Like if that guy were here, who would he be? What kind of person is he?” he asks.

I take a deep breath. Talking about my ex isn’t something I love. In fact, I hate it. But I did say anything, so there’s no turning back.

“His name was David. He works for a company we do business with. We met years ago, and my dad encouraged the relationship. He was a big fan,” I say. “By all accounts, he was a nice guy. Knew how to navigate this world, knew how to talk to people. We started off hot and heavy. Then, as time went on, he grew colder and more distant.”

“Why?” he asks.

“I don’t really know. What’s worse is he wanted to keep up appearances, but behind the scenes, there was no affection. There was nothing. He told me he didn’t see a romantic future with me. And that was that.”

“That sucks,” he says. “But I guess that happens sometimes.”

“Yeah, but he still wanted to proceed forward. A loveless marriage in exchange for both of our companies to prosper,” I say.

“Oh, to hell with that,” he says.

“My thoughts exactly.”

Avery brushes his thumb over my lips before leaning in to kiss me, pressing into me with his entire body as he does.
