I was quiet all the way home, even though Dad kept trying to talk to me about all kinds of stuff. “You want to watch a movie together tonight?” he asked, but I didn’t answer. “Maybe we could play a game. How about that one with the food crown? I’m going to beat you at that one of these days.”

I still didn’t answer. I just stared out the window, trying not to cry. Couldn’t he see that I was giving him the silent treatment?

When we got home, I ran out of the car and stayed in my room, snuggling President Ollama on my bed, but even the president couldn’t make me feel better. At one point, I heard Mom and Dad talking softly, and I peeked out my door and tried to spy on their conversation. Mom noticed me spying on them and told me it was time for dinner, so I finally left my room and walked to the table, slumping down in my chair with a great big sigh.

Mom placed a plate of meatloaf and mashed potatoes in front of me, but I wasn’t hungry. I just stared at my plate.

“Aven and I were thinking we’d play that food crown game after dinner,” said Dad, chewing his meatloaf like nothing at all was wrong. “Maybe we could do it for dessert. I think we have some strawberries in the fridge.”

“That sounds like fun,” said Mom.
