Bertha and the Influence of Martin

Bertha would have been familiar with the monastic life and the positive impact Christianity had made on the lives of the Frankish people. Both of Bertha’s younger sisters were nuns: Bertilflede in Tours itself and the youngest, Theologilda, at Sainte-Croix in Poitiers. Bertha seems to have known Gregory of Tours, who was consecrated bishop in c. 573. Gregory mentions Ingoberga and her daughter Bertha’s marriage in his writings and may have been instrumental in its arrangement, together with her uncle Guntram and possibly even Queen Brunhild, who was Bertha’s aunt by marriage.

Less clear is what aspect of the life of Saint Martin Bertha carried with her to Canterbury, when she dedicated her royal chapel to his name. Was it his life and ministry of healing and pastoral care for the poor? Or, as a Merovingian princess, would she have in mind her family’s royal cult of Saint Martin and his cloak, the trappings and reinforcement of Merovingian power? How Augustine was able both to conceive and carry out the mission among the Angli would depend very much on the answer.
