Audrey

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” I ask for the hundredth time as Atlas and I trek through the vibrant forest. All around us, birds chirp and frogs croak, while vines hang from the trees, making it feel more like a jungle than a forest.

Just like last time, his answer remains the same. “Yes.”

I hear the ocean in the distance, and salt wafts to me on a cooling breeze. That’s the only reason I’m not complaining about being out of the cabin.

My question, however, is due to the insecurity I feel over the guys teaching me how to resist an alpha’s command, better known as their bark.

A yip at my feet keeps me from falling over a log. Assured I’m not going to kill myself on the trail, Lulu takes off toward Atlas, leaving me to follow behind them.

Wearing a new pair of black leggings and an oversized, off the shoulder cream T-shirt with hiking boots, I feel a little more like myself. I worry they ransacked my apartment back in Serenity, but there were tags on my top. They even gave me a new bralette, which peeks out when the shirt falls to the side. I’m curious as to when they picked this up.

I know I’m feeling like my old self because my eyes keep trailing to Atlas and the way his pants move over his ass. No man should have an ass that round.

“Stop staring,” Hawk whispers in my ear, almost startling me, his hot breath gusting over my neck.

“The view is nice.” I shrug. “Why shouldn’t I take advantage of it?”

Hawk’s laughter warms me and sinks into my skin. “I looked too,” he whispers, sending a flash of heat rushing through my veins.

“Pay attention,” Atlas scolds, but I can see a smile lifting his lips as he steps free of the forest and onto a shoreline that’s more pebble than sand.

Hawk whistles at Lulu in a few short bursts, and she jumps at Atlas before taking off in the distance.

My boots hit the shore, and for a moment, I let everything roll off me with the salty breeze. In the distance, I can just make out a shoreline that I know curves and winds away. To the left, nothing but the sea stretches as far as the eye can see.

Even though it is cold, I want nothing more than to rush into the sea and dive beneath the gentle waves. Here, where the land cuts off the ocean, the water is mild, unlike the waves from home.

A hand slips into mine, leading me away from my spot. Opening my eyes, I see Hawk, his amber eyes sharp and observant.

“How did you get the nickname Hawk?” I don’t want to completely walk away from the ocean, but I follow him and Atlas toward an outcropping of rocks that look like they fell from a mountain. They are out of place here.

“It’s my sharp wit,” he answers. Pausing before me, he lifts me up and settles me on a rock.
