Once Travis had gone, Casey mulled over the interview. Travis obviously cared deeply about Aimee. He also saw the naivete in her that Casey had from their first meeting. She couldn’t blame him for his questions or for his protectiveness.

However, he’d given her an idea. It was true that almost no one knew about Aimee’s situation.

But Nick Colotti did.

CannaBD headquarters

Elmton, New York

10:45 a.m.

Nick was in a fine mood.

He leaned back in his office chair, locked his fingers behind his head, and decided he would go out and eat some real food for lunch today, not just scarf down one or two random granola bars that were stuffed in his desk drawer. It might not yet be time for an all-out celebration, but his instincts told him that he’d be scheduling a victory dinner for the team quite soon.

He’d just hung up with his attorney. The contract sealing the deal on Jason Williams becoming a CannaBD investor was going faster and more smoothly than expected. It had only been a few days, and already things were rolling along. Several more document exchanges, a week’s worth of reviewing and tweaking, and they would be on the verge of having its largest investor ever—other than his dad.

His cell phone rang, indicating it was his office number being transferred over, and he punched the accept button.

“Nick Colotti speaking.”

“Good morning, Mr. Colotti,” a woman’s voice greeted him. “This is Casey Woods of Forensic Instincts. I hope I haven’t called at a bad time.”

Nick’s good mood vanished.

“Mr. Colotti?”

Nick found his tongue. “Yes, sorry. I was in the middle of something with my attorney.”

“I apologize. Shall I call back?”

“No, it’s fine. We just wrapped up.”

“Good.” Casey Woods sounded just as she did on camera—professional, outgoing, and a little intimidating. “I’ll only take a moment of your time—at least for now.”

Nick wet his lips with the tip of his tongue. “I guess this is about Aimee.”

“Yes. She told me she confided in you about our representing her, first, to discover what really happened to Rita Edwell, and second, to safeguard her, especially since Chris Maher was murdered.”

Nick was feeling more unsettled by the minute. Still, he wasn’t stupid enough to lie about something Forensic Instincts already knew firsthand. “She did. I was really upset about Rita Edwell. And Aimee was a mess. She was also scared to death that Chris Maher was going to kill her. But now he’s dead, too. That’s all I know.”

“That’s quite a bit.”

Nick blew out a breath. “Aimee’s worked for me pretty much since I started CannaBD. She’s incredibly sharp and a huge part of why we’re so successful. I’m her boss. She felt I needed to know what was going on. But it’s not as if we’re tight friends. It’s all business. Period.”

“And yet, aside from Aimee’s boyfriend, Travis, you’re the only one she’s talked to about her situation.”

“As you just said, Travis is her boyfriend. It’s natural that she go to him. In my case, she told me out of respect.”

Casey wasn’t letting up.
