Mom looked excited. “How long will it take before the fish bite?”

“We have to be patient,” Astrid said. That’s one thing she knew— waiting was a big part of fishing.

“Mom, fishing is calm and relaxing. But when you do catch something, it might surprise you,” said Apollo. “That makes it fun!”

“Thanks for the warning! Now I’ll be ready for a good surprise— not a scary one!” Mom said.

Astrid nodded. “And fishing makes great memories.”

Dad clapped his hands. “Fishing memories are my favorite,” he said. “I still remember the first time I fished after I came to this country. I wish I could remember fishing in Laos, but I was too young.”

“But you had fun, right?” asked Apollo.

“I’m sure I did!” Dad smiled. “With the fish we get today, I’ll make crispy fried fish. Then our delicious dinner will be a great memory too!”

“And I can make fish soup,” said Mom happily.

Astrid and Apollo smiled. At last, it looked like Mom was having fun.

“And pepper! Don’t forget to add pepper,” said Apollo.

“Just not too much,” said Astrid.

Eliana played with her toy fishing pole while the rest of the family waited.

After a few minutes, Mom said, “Anyone want snacks?”

“Me, me, me!” said the kids.

“I’d like a warm drink. Anyone else?” Dad said.

“Me, me, me!” said the kids again.

Mom passed out sweet rice crackers and crunchy shrimp chips. Dad poured hot Vietnamese coffee for himself and Mom. Then he handed mugs of hot chocolate to the kids.

“When will we see fish?” Mom asked again, sipping from her steaming cup.

“Be patient,” Astrid and Apollo said at the same time.

Mom shrugged and laughed. “I guess I still have to learn that lesson!”

Suddenly, Apollo’s line wiggled.

“Oh, I got a fish friend!” he exclaimed. He set down his mug and stood up. He tugged on the line.

“Great job, Apollo. Keep pulling!” Dad said.

Apollo yanked the pole. The line looked like it was about to snap. Then he pulled harder, and the line came up out of the water. A long fish flopped from the end of it!

“Yay!” Astrid cheered.

Dad helped Apollo take the fish from the hook and put it in a bucket with a little water.

“It’s a big fish,” Dad said proudly.
