Mom looked excited. âHow long will it take before the fish bite?â
âWe have to be patient,â Astrid said. Thatâs one thing she knewâ waiting was a big part of fishing.
âMom, fishing is calm and relaxing. But when you do catch something, it might surprise you,â said Apollo. âThat makes it fun!â
âThanks for the warning! Now Iâll be ready for a good surpriseâ not a scary one!â Mom said.
Astrid nodded. âAnd fishing makes great memories.â
Dad clapped his hands. âFishing memories are my favorite,â he said. âI still remember the first time I fished after I came to this country. I wish I could remember fishing in Laos, but I was too young.â
âBut you had fun, right?â asked Apollo.
âIâm sure I did!â Dad smiled. âWith the fish we get today, Iâll make crispy fried fish. Then our delicious dinner will be a great memory too!â
âAnd I can make fish soup,â said Mom happily.
Astrid and Apollo smiled. At last, it looked like Mom was having fun.
âAnd pepper! Donât forget to add pepper,â said Apollo.
âJust not too much,â said Astrid.
Eliana played with her toy fishing pole while the rest of the family waited.
After a few minutes, Mom said, âAnyone want snacks?â
âMe, me, me!â said the kids.
âIâd like a warm drink. Anyone else?â Dad said.
âMe, me, me!â said the kids again.
Mom passed out sweet rice crackers and crunchy shrimp chips. Dad poured hot Vietnamese coffee for himself and Mom. Then he handed mugs of hot chocolate to the kids.
âWhen will we see fish?â Mom asked again, sipping from her steaming cup.
âBe patient,â Astrid and Apollo said at the same time.
Mom shrugged and laughed. âI guess I still have to learn that lesson!â
Suddenly, Apolloâs line wiggled.
âOh, I got a fish friend!â he exclaimed. He set down his mug and stood up. He tugged on the line.
âGreat job, Apollo. Keep pulling!â Dad said.
Apollo yanked the pole. The line looked like it was about to snap. Then he pulled harder, and the line came up out of the water. A long fish flopped from the end of it!
âYay!â Astrid cheered.
Dad helped Apollo take the fish from the hook and put it in a bucket with a little water.
âItâs a big fish,â Dad said proudly.
