Chapter Seventeen

When I arrive at the administration building in the central headquarters, I’m unsettled to find Lutz waiting outside the room too. He seems surprised to see me, but he hides it quickly behind his own mask. For all intents and purposes, he couldn’t care less whether I’m okay.

He leans against the doorframe as we wait to be called in. “Looks like you’re going to be my friend this evening, sweetheart.”

Within moments, Superior Fallon opens the door for us, revealing Gareth sitting at a desk on the far side of the room.

Hmm. After what Rowan said about Fallon and Gareth telling him he was going to be kicked out, seeing the two of them together doesn’t inspire me with confidence.

Master Gareth remains seated, giving a bare gesture with his hand to indicate that we should enter. Once we’re seated opposite him, he lowers his hand to rest on a thick book sitting on the desk in front of him.

“This is my ledger.”

I glance at Lutz but he looks bored. I’m guessing he’s heard this speech before. I know what a Ledger is. Gareth knows I know, but it looks like we’re going to go through this speech anyway.

“All assassins have one. If you succeed in becoming a Superior, the Guardian will assign a ledger to you. When a client wishes to engage your skills, they must write their name and the name of the target in your ledger. Every time a ledger is written in, the ink appears in the Guardian’s ledger too. She will either sanction the assassination or refuse it.”

He opens the book but I don’t lean in to read it. I know what’s going to happen if I try: the writing on the page will turn to squiggles, wriggling across the page as if it’s literally alive. It’s completely unreadable.

Gareth smirks. “Only I can read my ledger. Only you will be able to read yours.”

He slams the book shut. “Written in my book is the name of a particularly violent goblin who has disguised himself as a human. He currently poses as the owner of a bookshop on a street called Saber Lane not far from here. He has been responsible for the disappearance of a number of children, but the police can’t prove anything. That’s where we come in.”

Gareth folds his arms over his chest. “His death has been sanctioned, however it is not your job to end him. You will go tonight to map the layout of the street, identify vantage points, and study his movements. You will be permitted to use magic, including blurring, for this task.”

Superior Fallon hands us our rings and I slip mine on.

“You will meet at the door to the Realm at sunset. You must spend the afternoon preparing.”

“Thank you, Master Gareth.” Lutz stands and I follow.

As we reach the door, Gareth calls out to us. “One last thing… This goblin can’t be allowed to remain on this earth. While your job is to observe, obviously every day he remains in this city, more people are endangered.
