“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” Jane asks, lying face up on the massage table. The boys have long gone to bed, allowing the perfect time for Jane to receive her monthly massage.

“What do you mean?” I ask her, stilling my movement.

“Don’t ‘what do you mean’ me. You know what I mean. I can’t honestly believe it, after this long, you finally said yes to a date with someone. I thought it would never happen.”

“Gee, thanks,” I say, feigning feeling insulted.

“What was the final thing that did it for you? Did he get on his knees and beg at the park? Did he buy you an island? Mattie told me all about the deliveries he’s been sending you at work, was one of them a diamond necklace?”

Now she’s just being ridiculous.

I laugh, unable to believe the words coming out of her mouth. “If I find someone with enough money to buy me an island, I’ll marry him on the spot.”

“As long as it’s big enough for the rest of us, then I’ll approve,” Jane chimes in, not the least bit ashamed.

Smiling, I slide a hot towel around the base of her neck, letting the heat soak into her skin.

“Sooo, what was it?” She asks again, not letting the subject go without an answer. The problem is, I don’t know what finally did it. Whether it was how my dad and brother seemed to approve of him, or how he shared his fries with me, or how he just seems like a really great guy. Not wanting to share too much with her just yet, I go with the simple answer.

“He turned his plate of fries towards me.” I say like it’s nothing.

“Wait, say that again.”

“At lunch, when he caught me stealing his fries, he turned his plate toward me to share them instead of getting mad or annoyed.”

“Ohhhh. So that’s what he was doing. Mattie and I saw him turn his fries away from himself, but we both just assumed he didn’t like fries. Which would be odd, by the way.”

I can’t help but chuckle at that; she’s right. It would be weird.

“Trent never shared anything with me, not his fries or dessert. Nothing.” More because he didn’t want me to gain weight, but she doesn’t need to know that. Instead, I say, “As silly as it may sound, it’s something that means a lot to me.”

Her hand moves out from beneath the sheets, reaching for my own hand. “I’ll share my fries and desserts with you, Ash.”

I squeeze her hand before letting it go and getting back to work. “I know you would. Have I told you that I love you yet?”

“Every day and twice on Sundays.” She smiles brightly. Jane may not be my blood sister, but she’s the closest I’ve had to one. Now, if only my brother Mattie would get his head out of the sand and snag her up before someone else does.

“So, when’s the first date? Did you guys plan it already? You know I’ll babysit those boys anytime.
