Twelve

They pulled in front of a cute little house in Branford that blended in with the rest of the houses on the block. Sophia got off the bike, and Colby immediately felt the chill air hit his back as she moved away. It had been tempting to just keep driving, to keep her with him for a while longer and not worry about what she was really facing. But the sooner she met with the captain, the sooner she could prove her innocence. From the looks of things, she needed that.

Colby went to the house key’s hiding place under the porch and took it out. Effortlessly he pushed the motorcycle over before he unlocked the garage and lifted the door. When the motorcycle was safely inside, he joined Sophia on the porch. Her hair was coming out of her ball cap and the dark circles under her eyes testified to the fact that she was exhausted. He knew she wasn’t going to get much rest tonight with what was ahead. Neither would he.

She looked so small and vulnerable standing there wringing her hands, he squashed the impulse to pull her into his arms and tell her it would be okay. She needed his professional help right now, more than she needed anything else from him. He had to keep that in mind. Pushing the key into the deadbolt, he unlocked the door and held it open for her. She slipped by.

Sophia didn’t hesitate, but flipped the lights on and illuminated a small living room and kitchen area. “It’s nice.” She walked to the sofa and sank down in it. “It even looks like someone lives here.” Her cheery demeanor didn’t last, as Colby didn’t answer her. He walked in and checked the rooms of the house. Then he checked his gun. Everything was ready, just in case. When he came back to her, she rubbed her hands over her face. “So, what’s next?”

Before Colby could say a word, there was a knock at the door. Sophia stood immediately. “Who is that?” she whispered.

He held up a hand. “Don’t worry. It’s a friend of mine.” He checked out the window, then opened the door. “Hey, thanks for helping us out, man.” He turned to Sophia as the newcomer walked toward them. “This is Rafe Kelly. Former Navy SEAL, who now does security and helps us with special cases occasionally.”

“Nice to meet you.” Sophia met him halfway and stretched out her hand. “So, I’m a special case?”

Rafe shook it and gave her a grin. “I guess so.” He set down a backpack he’d had on his shoulder and took a seat in the armchair on the other side of the coffee table. “Cole, I’ve got a message for you from Claire. It’s not good news.”

Colby stepped closer. “What is it?”

Rafe glanced at Sophia, then back at Colby. “You can just say it,” Colby said, wanting Rafe to know he trusted Sophia.

“They pulled a body from the fire at Sophia’s house. They were in the front hall near the door.
