CHAPTER ELEVEN

That night, as I tried to fall asleep, I guilt plagued me. Cliff had fallen asleep as we had been talking. If he was concerned about me spending time with Alrekur, he didn't let it show.

Every time I thought about Cliff, images of Alrekur popped into my mind. I glanced over at Cliff, sleeping so peacefully. I loved him, and had my entire life. He was handsome and kind, generous to a fault. Deep down, I knew that was exactly why he had spoken with our children.

Alrekur's beautiful face came into my mind again. I tried pushing it away, but just like in real life, he was pushy and refused to go. My stomach flipped at the thought.

Did I actually like that about him now? Just as he enjoyed my fire, as he called it, did I actually enjoy his arrogance? Or maybe it wasn't even pride. Maybe it was something else entirely, and I just called it that so I could push him away.

I sat up, frustrated. Why had I agreed to go to Iceland? Hadn't there been other times over the decades when I had refused to travel with Alrekur? Why had I agreed to go this time? If I'd only said no, then I wouldn't be conflicted.

Looking over at Cliff to make sure he was still sound asleep, I got up. I couldn't sit still. I'd have to deal with wandering the hallways. I threw on some casual clothes and pulled my hair up. Given that it was a castle full of vampires, I was bound to run into quite a few while walking around late at night.

Sneaking out as quietly as I could, I listened for noise. I was going to avoid others as much as I could. Everything was quiet, so I headed for the main part of the castle. Even though I had spent so much time there, I never tired of the magnificence. Every part was lovely. Even if something appeared plain, one only had to take a closer look to see a hidden carving or some other surprise.

As a child, I had made a game of finding them, pretending they were clues to a lost treasure. Times like this, when I was frustrated or confused, it was easy to slip back into the game again. Even after all the decades, I was still able to find some art that I had missed before.

I rounded a corner and froze.

Sitting in a chair, staring outside, sat Clara. She glanced up at me in surprise. I expected her to run off, but she didn't budge.

"Clara," I whispered. I walked toward her, not sure what she would do. "What are you doing here?"

Her face held no emotion. "I heard my sister was released."

I nodded. "I granted her freedom. She's going to marry Tanner."

"That was kind of you."

"Have you seen her yet?" I asked.

She shook her head, still showing no clue as to what she was thinking.

"How have you been, Clara? I've really missed you."

"Have you?" The slightest bit of anger showed on her face, but nothing more.
