CAFÉS, RESTAURANTS, AND RETAIL SPACES
The bottom line with showing in commercial spaces outside the art world: if you don’t need to do it, don’t. Selling to commercial spaces, is fine, of course. We’re talking here about consigning your work for an exhibition.
The risk of damage is high—especially in bustling restaurants and bars—while the benefits are usually low. People go to these places to eat, drink, or buy clothes. Sure, it’s nice to see some art on the walls, but they’re not likely to appreciate your work in the way you’d like them to. A lot of them won’t even notice it.
As always, there are exceptions to this rule. Some stores set aside separate rooms for rotating exhibits. Some restaurants are known for the quality of their art program. Since these spaces look and act more like traditional galleries, visitors naturally treat the work more like art and less like décor.
Sometimes you don’t have a choice. Maybe you live in a small town and the café down the street is one of the only places around where local artists can show their work. Or you haven’t been able to get into any group shows for a while. Or the content of your work relates to food, fashion, or consumer society. If you do decide to hang your work at a restaurant or retail space, be extra careful with installation and any special instructions. Make sure the work is labeled and you are properly credited. And always make sure the place has insurance.
