ProbCause and Artybollocks fun aside, contemporary art theory has a place, particularly in academia and blue chip contemporary art galleries or museums. It might be expected at the innovative Mass MoCA (North Adams, Massachusetts), but visitors would find it difficult to navigate high theory at the more traditional cultural institution Wadsworth Atheneum (Hartford, Connecticut), a drive of just an hour or two down the road. Discussions among peers or during graduate seminars are integral to every artist’s development. The question is how useful, or informative, such discussions might be for larger, art-appreciating, general audiences.
