The meetings with the Welsh kings went well, and Arthur was glad that he had decided to spend the winter in Caerleon.

Ogrfan’s wife approved of the betrothal, and Arthur asked to speak with Gwen alone before Ogrfan and his family returned to Ergyng.

“I imagine this is a bit overwhelming,” Arthur said as he and Gwen walked across the courtyard together.

“A little, my King. I’ve always known that my father would arrange my marriage, but I just assumed it would be to a Welshman.”

“I’m half-Welsh, if that helps,” Arthur said.

Gwen smiled. “So am I.”

“I know.”

Gwen gazed at Arthur, and then turned away timidly. “I’ve heard stories about you, my King.”

“What stories?” Arthur asked.

“I’ve heard you called the ‘Boy King’.”

Arthur grimaced. “I have to do something about that. What other stories have you heard?”

“About you being the bear of the north, and your flashing blade bringing death to your enemies.”

“The song?” Arthur asked. “I heard my soldiers singing it, but I never learned the words.”

“I’ll teach them to you someday, my King.”

They talked for a while longer, and then Ogrfan and his wife approached. Arthur kissed Gwen’s hand, and then she and her mother left.

“What do you think, my King?” Ogrfan asked.

“She’s a truly lovely girl, Ogrfan. It’s too soon to know what kind of wife and queen she’ll make, but I’m happy with her.”

“That calls for a drink, my King!”
