Chapter Ten of Nineteen

When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened

“Yasmin!” Lemarik called as he walked through the marbled halls of his mountain fortress.

“My love!” His beautiful golden goddess answered him as she came running to meet him. Her anklets jingled softly at her bare feet and the long silver earrings in her ears tinkled like the finest chimes. She was breathtakingly lovely. She wrapped her arms around his neck and he enfolded her in his purple robe.

“Yasmin, you take away my breath! I have missed you! Have you missed me?”

He hooked one arm in hers and walked down the tiles beside the pool where the dolphin sprayed water. He swayed slightly as he walked past the fountain. The two green halves of the orb lay just where he had left it. None of the servants would touch it.

“Of course, I have missed you terribly, my love. Where have you been? What have you been doing? Did you find a man to live in?” She asked him with excited curiosity.

“I have been soaring as the Golden Eagle!” He told her.

“The Golden Eagle?” She asked and her smile faded rapidly. “Lucio?”

“Yes!” He smiled and patted her hand.

“You didn’t eat him, did you?” She asked him cautiously.

“No. No. No. No. No,” he shook his head. His voice was pleasant and soothing, but the thought of eating the Golden Eagle made him shiver and shudder. “Mmmmm. I considered it, but he is Adar’s brother. It would have been quite rude. There was another brother that I would have consumed in other circumstances. A most delicious little man. You know him as Simon of Grenoble?”

“Yes, the one they call the Healer,” she nodded. “He has great magick. He is the son of the Grand Master. The magick of the Great Suleymon lies within him.”

“And I observed Adar’s woman!” he told her as he eyed her reaction out of the corner of his eye. Her jealousy of him made him shiver.

She narrowed her eyes. “Are you sure you did not do more than observe her? She was once a lover of the Golden Eagle.”

“She is Adar’s woman now, but the Golden Eagle has many pleasant memories of her,” Lemarik said, lowered his head and looked up at her. “It would have been most rude and most likely dangerous to have approached her. Adar has new magick. And his woman also has magick! I would not risk such a thing... besides, I am your servant and your slave.”

“And what of Ruth?” She asked him casually as they approached the nest-like bed near the terrace. It was night and a billion stars shone in the sky behind a crescent moon beyond the railings.

“Ahhh. Ruth! He has found a jewel in her.” The Djinni raised his head and looked out at the stars. “She simply adores him, but she is no match for your beauty, Yasmin. She is but a mortal woman. Though she has many saving graces. I could make her a free soul, but...”

Yasmin said nothing.
