A Really Cool Crab

Aspiky shell trundles along the ocean floor, navigating with its many legs. It might look like a walking helmet. Or it might look like a strange relative of a crab or lobster. In fact, this armored creature is called a horseshoe crab. But horseshoe crabs are actually related to scorpions and spiders. And horseshoe crabs are even older than the dinosaurs—they have been on Earth for about 450 million years!

The tough shell of a horseshoe crab is made of chitin. This is the same type of material that makes up the hard outer covering of many insects. Unlike keratin or bone, chitin does not grow. The horseshoe crab molts several times during its first years of life.
