Chapter 10

Jessica hadn’t heard from Dan since their dinner date, and she couldn’t stop thinking about his father. An idea formed, and she bit back a chuckle as she walked into the kitchen. Emily, Maddie and Izzy sat at the table eating breakfast. “Girls.”

Three heads bobbed her way in unison. She hoped they would be as excited as she was. “I have an idea for a family ministry.”

The younger girls’ eyes glazed with merriment. Emily rolled hers, then stared at the table.

“What is it?” asked Izzy.

Glancing at Emily, Jessica determined not to let her oldest child spoil this idea. She looked at the excited anticipation on the faces of Izzy and Maddie and smiled. “Well, Uncle Woolly told me his dad sometimes spends the night at the Renewed Hope Center. I believe they let people volunteer to help in the kitchen. Maybe they’d let us. What do you think?”

“What’s the Reviewed Hope Center?” asked Izzy.

“Renewed,” Jessica said, “it’s a house for people who don’t have a place to call home.”

“Dan’s dad doesn’t have a place to live?” asked Izzy.

“Why doesn’t he stay with Dan?” said Maddie.

“What? Is he a drunk or something?” Emily retorted.

Jessica sent a warning glare at her oldest. “I will take your phone away from you for a month.”

Emily huffed and pursed her lips together.

“I don’t know all the answers to your questions,” Jessica continued. “Dan just told me that his father stays there sometimes.”

“Did he tell you that when you went on your date?” piped Izzy.

Emily smirked.

Jessica blinked. “It was not a date. It was just dinner.”

Maddie clapped. “I think it sounds fun.”

“Can I wash dishes there?” Izzy jumped from her chair and grabbed Jessica’s arm.

“Oh, to be five again and actually want to do the dishes.” She patted her daughter’s head. “If they’ll let you, I don’t mind if you help with dishes.”

“Yippee!” Izzy yelled.

“When can we go, Mom?” Maddie asked.

“Well...” Jessica kissed the top of Izzy’s head. “Since you’re out of school on fall break, I thought we’d go today.”

“Hooray!” Maddie and Izzy hollered.

Izzy lifted her finger. “Did you know Steven Spielberg used to live in Arizona? Miss Stephens said he’s the man who made the alien movie.”

“What alien movie?” asked Maddie.

“The one Mom liked when she was a kid,” said Izzy.

Maddie scratched the top of her head. “I don’t know which one Mom liked.” She shook her head. “I don’t like alien movies.”

“She’s talking about E.T.” Jessica smiled, trying to appreciate Izzy’s new pleasure of sharing all of Miss Stephens’s fun Arizona facts.

Maddie snapped her fingers. “The one where the alien phones home.”

Izzy stuck her finger up in the air and lowered her voice. “E.T. phone home.”

Emily shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “Do we have to go today?”

“Yes.” Jessica placed her hand in the small of her oldest daughter’s back. “Let’s try to have a positive attitude about this.”

“I get to sit by the window on Mom’s side,” said Izzy.

“No fair,” whined Maddie.

Jessica groaned. “Why must we
