Chapter Eleven

SITTING IN THE WARM undercover patrol car, Joci waited for Quinn to finish his call. It was an odd feeling being in any part of a police vehicle, but she rather liked the sense of danger. They would often troll the streets of Des Moines together. Finding shady places to park was among the other activities they did in and on the unmarked car. She smirked at the fond memories made in the back seat.

The decision to speak with Quinn was her own. Not even Adrian knew about it. She felt a teensy bit bad telling him she wasn’t free when she was going to chat with her boy toy instead. Despite the guilt, she needed to do this on her own and without Adrian’s input.

A week had passed since she and Adrian slept together. It was just the one night and morning, but Adrian wanted more and told her as much. She couldn’t, though. It was fun, very fun, but her heart wasn’t in it. When she reflected on it later, she had to admit the truth that he was a stand-in for the man she wanted. Obviously, she hadn’t been thinking it while licking whipped cream off Adrian’s abs, but the hangover the next day reminded her of the fact.

“Sorry about that,” Quinn apologized, turning toward her. “Work never ends, but you’re accustomed to that.” He turned up the heat. “Now, what’s up? It’s been a while since I’ve seen you outside the courthouse. Been hiding from me?”

Joci offered him a weak smile and saw his green eyes waver from his usual chipper attitude. “We’ve been friends for the last year and a half, and I’ve never shared myself with anyone else like I have with you.”

Quinn flipped his radio down. “And I appreciate that. I think it helped us both with the cruelty we’ve been through.”

Nodding in remembrance of his sorrowful story, Joci continued, “But Adrian and I slept together.” She waited for a response, but not even a muscle jerked in his handsome face. “Clearly that’s old news.”

“No, nothing like that,” he reassured. “I always assumed the two of you would give it another go sooner or later. I mean, I’m not a fan of the guy, for my own selfish reasons, but if you want to step into that pool again, I’ll be on the sideline with a floatie.”

“You are quite the detective,” she teased. “But thank you.”

“Not yet, but someday.” Quinn started the engine and pulled away from the curb.

“It was just the once.” She noticed his eyebrows lift. “Okay, well, one night and part of the morning, but I told him I couldn’t continue with more.”

“Hmm, that’s interesting. I think I know why.” He didn’t look at her even after the subtle hint. “I’m kind of surprised your client hasn’t made a move, to be honest.”

Joci’s heart sped up. “Which client? What do you mean?”

Quinn eyed her strangely. “Cameron Shearer, the murder guy I arrested. Man, the way he looked at you during depos.
