Back In The Saddle

I was doing okay for a while. I encountered a new type of monster I’d never seen before, resembling a cross between a hedgehog and a snake, emerging from under one of the parked cars. I managed to defeat it without issue, though upon its death, it released what I assumed to be noxious green gases.

Found “Poisonous Quill.”

The undead also seemed to evolve. Their previously decaying flesh had become taut and leathery, stretched over sinewy muscles ending in elongated fingers with sharpened claws instead of nails. These weren’t mere rotting husks anymore; they were reborn, hungry entities.

“Lirai,” I whispered, eyeing the newly transformed undead milling around. “What do I need to know about these creatures?”

Notification: Query - “Cryptid Identification”

Details: These creatures are identified as Lesser Wendigos, born from a dark curse on those infected by the undead plague who consumed human flesh while alive. Unlike typical undead, Lesser Wendigos retain full strength and agility.

In simpler terms, they were incredibly strong and fast. I learned this the hard way when one Wendigo caught my scent, howled in rage, and its howl was quickly echoed by the others. Suddenly, all twenty or so Wendigos were on all fours, charging towards me.

I bolted towards the hardware store, hoping to find safety behind its doors.

But I didn’t make it. Just ten feet from the door, I felt a bone spear pierce my skull, thrown by a type of advanced undead I hadn’t noticed.

Back in “My Room,” frustration boiled over. “I was this close,” I griped to the unresponsive mimic. Despite my efforts, I was back to square one.

“Lirai, it’s awfully quiet. How long until the Black Tournament starts, and any ideas on clearing the undead outside?” My tone was a mix of anger and desperation.

Notification: Query - “Time remaining until Black Tournament, General Guidance.”

Details: Approximately 22 hours remain until the Black Tournament. Given your current performance, it’s unlikely you’ll reach the tournament location in time and will instead be teleported. It's advised to use upgrades wisely to manage respawns and continually engage the undead horde outside.

“So, I need to get my act together,” I concluded, not expecting an answer from Lirai. My father’s advice echoed in my mind, urging me to put in the necessary effort. I logged into the Crusader Systems terminal to make some much-needed upgrades.
