In what became known as âthe Parting,â they were relocated to New Mexico to live with the Mescalero Apache on their reservation. Those remaining at Fort Sill were settled on small, poor tracts of land north of the fort. In the new homesteads, the Fort Sill Apache lost the unifying force of living together. âYet we survived in spite of everything,â said the curators of an exhibition about the Chiricahua Apache at the National Museum of the American Indian. âWe kept our values and our traditions, no matter what.â23
