It is assumed for this course that the electric field between two plates of opposite charge is uniform. The electric potential and the electric field is related by V = Ed

➤ V is the electric potential,

➤ E is the uniform electric field,

➤ d is the distance between the two points containing the E, m

As defined by a positive test charge, electric field lines point away from a positive source charge. The electric potential decreases as the distance from the source charge increases. Electric field lines run from high electric potential to low electric potential.

The electric force is conservative. The work done by the electric field is WE = – ΔU = – qΔV

The work done by any conservative force is equal to the negative change in potential energy.
