Between the black-painted fingernails and the haughty sneer on her lips, there was no mistaking the voluptuous woman’s identity. Calista strode into the gymnasium, walking straight toward Morgen.

Morgen started to lunge behind the racks of quilts set up to the side of the door but remembered at the last second that sudden movement would allow people to see through her invisibility illusion. She crept to the side, angling toward stands that held patriotic red-white-and-blue quilts and crossing her fingers that Calista couldn’t sense anything. Thus far, she hadn’t seen Morgen—Morgen was certain Calista would have an extreme reaction if she did.

Calista did, however, frown in her direction when she reached the clipboard on the bleachers, as if she could tell that someone had been there taking a photo of people’s information.

Morgen ducked fully behind one of the stands, though it was a silly hiding spot. If her spell wore off, all of the witches would be able to see her shoes under the quilt—it didn’t fall all the way to the floor. Morgen resisted the urge to crouch down and peer under the gap. She also didn’t poke her head around the stand.

The earlier conversations had fallen silent. Was everyone staring at Calista? Or at Morgen?

Another breeze whispered through the open door, and an animal with reddish-brown fur prowled past the stands. A fox.

Wait, that was Olivia’s familiar, not Calista’s. That had to mean both women were here.

The fox hopped onto the bleachers and out of Morgen’s limited view. From her hiding spot, she could see other quilts, a fire extinguisher mounted on the wall, and a large scoreboard for basketball games.

“Your membership in the coven has been revoked, Calista,” the woman with the staff said. “You’ve been asked not to attend our meetings anymore.”

“And I had no intention of doing so,” Calista answered, the sound of her voice triggering Morgen’s memories of their fight in that garage, “but someone has to warn you women of the danger you’re in from that Keller girl.”

Uh.

“We’re aware of her work.”

Heels clacked on the wooden floor as Calista strode toward the group. Morgen couldn’t resist peering around the stand. The witches were focused on Calista, not on her hiding spot.

A woman on a back bleacher stood up. Phoebe. Morgen hadn’t been able to see her from her previous position.

Olivia walked in and stopped in front of Morgen’s stand, blocking her view further. Her furry familiar hopped down from the bleachers and joined her by the door, and they faced the gathering.

Morgen knew she should slip out the door before someone discovered her—the fox had to be close enough to smell her already—but she wanted to see what happened.

“Are you aware,” Calista said, “that she’s putting together a werewolf army to use to take over the town?”

Morgen’s jaw dropped. She was what?

“They’re up there in Wolf Wood—at Gwen’s house—every day, working for her, fortifying that farmhouse to turn it into a castle.”

Repairing the roof and building a deck hardly counted as fortifications. It wasn’t as if the Lobos were adding turrets and arrow slits to the house.
