Lubyanka Tower went into lockdown.

Every exit was covered, every door was locked, every dark corner was lit up by spotlights, but, in the end, it was just too late—she was gone.

For a long time, all Aleski did was stare at the security detail. He had every single man that could stand lined up in the square at attention. Some had bloody noses, others had black eyes forming and some were missing a fair few of their teeth. All of them looked sorry for themselves.

He stepped to their commander. ‘One little girl did this?’

‘Yes, Sir.’

This was not the way a man like Aleski wanted to finish his career.

He left them standing there at attention, crossed the cobblestones over to Sorokin who was tapping away on his iPad.

He looked up at Aleski. ‘What do you think?’

‘I think it’s one hell of a mess.’ He let a few things tick over in his mind. ‘If I were her, what would I do?’

‘Run?’ Sorokin said.

‘Maybe. Then again, maybe not. What’s her mission?’

‘To retrieve the master key.’

‘Not to extract the programmer?’

‘You think they’re still in the city?’ Sorokin said.

Aleski set fire to a cigarette. ‘Get me a list of every known MI6 safe house in Moscow. If this is my last day on the job, it’s going to matter.’
