TRAINING EQUIPMENT
Most of your bodybuilding exercises are performed with a barbell and a pair of dumbbells, which is how I began my bodybuilding career at age fifteen. A barbell is made of a five or six foot bar, which comes equipped with collars to hold the plates in place. Dumbbells are two short bars, usually fourteen inches in length, also equipped with collars. To these bars, additional weight is added in the form of steel plates. Of course, there is more sophisticated equipment called home gyms and that equipment is safer. Joining a commercial gym is another option. But before you go spending your money on a home gym or joining a commercial gym, first, be sure that this is something you are going to pursue, so it does not become just another expense (as I have witnessed many times during my bodybuilding years).
Certain bodybuilding movements require equipment such as a basic flat bench with racks to support a barbell when doing bench press or seated overhead press, it would be good to get a bench with an adjustable rack with safety hooks in the event you get stuck at the bottom of the bench press or overhead press, this way you can terminate the movement safely. You can also get one that is adjustable from flat to an incline position. It is a good investment as you get two pieces of equipment for the price of one. The bench is very important for the development of the chest, shoulders, and upper back muscles. This is all the equipment you will need to get started in the world of bodybuilding and physical fitness.
This is how I began my bodybuilding career, except that my bench was made of wood and I built it myself with the help of my good friend and master carpenter and cabinetmaker, the late Pete Marrero.
There is also one more piece of equipment which I feel is necessary but not a must. They come in pairs and are called âsquat racks.â These racks assist you when performing the leg exercise called squats or deep knee bends. They also assist you when performing the standing or seated barbell press. You will be able to handle more weight and the exercises will be easier and more comfortable by the aid of the racks. They can be adjusted to your desired height. Some benches come equipped with adjustable racks, again be sure they are equipped with safety hooks. As you advance and discover this is something you want to do, then invest in advanced equipment or join a gym.
Some trainees like wearing a lifting belt. This belt is made of leather and is normally about four inches wide in the back. This belt gives the trainee a sense of security when lifting heavy weights.
I personally donât wear one. I believe that if you perform each exercise in a controlled manner and deliberate way, you will minimize the chance of injury. Each exercise should be performed without sudden jerking in the
