CHAPTER

FOURTEEN

MAREN

Cooper steps into the office and pulls off his dripping jacket, hanging it by the door. “Do the streets always fill up when it rains? Or is this more than you usually get?”

Neither of us has brought up the events at the bar the night before last. By the time we got food and went back to his bedroom, things were back to normal between us. He railed the hell out of me, and I stumbled across the street afterward to crash until noon. Good times.

“It’s spring. Days or even weeks of steady rain aren’t out of the ordinary. And yeah, the drainage sucks. The grates probably need to be raked over or cleaned out.” I’m more concerned about a message that was left a few minutes ago. “A security company called to say they’ll be out Wednesday of next week. What’s that about?”

He swipes his hair back with one hand as he rustles through some paperwork on his desk. “I forgot to mention that. They’re coming to install security cameras.”

“Where?”

“Hmm?” he replies absently, looking at the page he picked up.

“Where are you installing cameras?”

The edge in my voice catches his attention and he looks up at me. “They’ll cover the streets, driveways, and yards. The footage will be backed up to a cloud where we can access it.”

“You can’t do that.”

He blinks at me. “It’s legal. A lot of private properties offer it for their tenants. It’ll lower the amount of your renter’s insurance.”

“I don’t care if it’s legal. Nobody wants to have spy cameras watching them come and go.”

“They aren’t spy cameras. It’s for safety. It’ll benefit everyone. If your car gets broken into or stolen, it’ll be helpful.”

“Or the cops can use it against someone who gets in a fight or smokes weed outside or might have a warrant because they skipped a court date.” Even Didi’s little porch store isn’t legal. He doesn’t understand. “Look, I get what you’re trying to do, but I’m telling you right now, nobody here is going to be cool with being monitored. If you want cameras in the laundry room or community building to protect your property, sure. But pointed at our trailers and yards? Absolutely not. They’re going to be pissed.”

After a moment of thought, he shrugs. “The cameras will be attached to the streetlights. It’s likely no one will even notice them.”

“They will when I tell them.” If he thinks I’m going to let this go, he’s crazy.

With a huff, he straightens his back and stares at me. “You’re being unreasonable.”

Crossing my arms, I get to my feet and look him in the eye. “And you’re being a dismissive ass. You hired me to keep things easy between you and the tenants, and I’m telling you, they won’t stand for this. We won’t.”

The room seems to crackle with energy while we stare at each other. Finally, he shakes his head. “Alright. We’ll poll the tenants. If at least half oppose, I’ll cancel the installation.”

“Fine, but you may as well cancel them now and save yourself the trouble.
