When we got to the campsite, after checking in with the park ranger, almost two hours later, the kids were just about ready to burst with all the pent-up energy. Things had got a little raucous on the bus, and Garratt had needed to go to the back and calm things down. It was just kids being kids, but Dan had threatened to pull over and throw them all off the bus if they didn't quiet down. So, Garratt got the job of sitting with them.

"Okay, guys," Gladys shouted above the chatter. "I need you to get the tents from the bus, and split into groups of four to put them up – each group of four will then share that tent."

"Hey, Cindy," a tall, gangly boy named Derek called. "You wanna share with me?"

As everyone laughed, Gladys clapped her hands for some quiet. "Hey, settle down, and no, Derek, Cindy will not be sharing with you. There will be no mixed sexes in the tents," she replied with a warning tone.

"As if I'd want to share with you anyway, Derek Pederson," Cindy grumbled. "Your feet likely smell like cheese and I know for a fact you fart like twenty times an hour."

More laughter broke out as Derek's friends all started to rib him, jumping on his back and messing up his hair.

"Hey, come on guys, let's all listen to Ms. Winter, because the quicker you do, the quicker you can have some free time," Garratt shouted above the noise.

For someone who was just getting his first experience at teaching, he was doing a great job. He'd fitted into the role perfectly, and the kids seemed to have a lot of respect for him - I hadn’t seen anyone mess with him like they did most trainee teachers.

Everyone stopped talking and let Gladys continue to tell them that once the tents were up, they could have some free time. There wasn't an awful lot around for them to do, and practically zero phone signal, so I hoped that boredom wouldn't lead some of them into doing something they shouldn't – we were in the middle of a woodland park, with a group of twenty hormonal teenagers, it could be asking for trouble.

"Are we allowed to leave the camp?" One of the girls asked.

"No, Darla," I replied. "You need to stay where we can see you."

Darla pouted and gave a side-long glance at Matty, Caleb's friend. Okay, so there was a couple I'd be keeping an eye on.

"It's going to be a little boring, don't you think?" another girl complained.

"Let's get the tents up first, and then think about how we fill our time, hey, Bethany?"

Bethany gave Garratt a small smile and nodded, fluttering her eyelashes at him. "Okay, Mr. Connor."

And that was something else I'd be keeping an eye on. Bethany most definitely had a crush on Garratt.

As the kids all scattered to get their tents set up, Garratt sidled up to me.

"Can't believe you're sharing with Gladys and I've got to share with Dan," he said in a quiet voice.
