Even before he saw the fighters, Misha Kenner knew what he was hearing: the growl of Merlin engines. Kenner’s C-46 had developed an engine problem. He and the crew were stuck on the ground with the disabled airplane.

Dawn was coming. And so were the Egyptian Spitfires.

Kenner jumped down from the C-46 and sprinted for shelter. He barely made it when the fighters swept down, guns blazing.

It was over in minutes. The Spitfires pulled up and headed back south. Kenner clambered out of his shelter and ran over to the C-46. He was astonished. The Egyptians had managed to score not a single hit on the C-46.

The Egyptians didn’t come back. By the end of the day Kenner’s airplane was repaired and on its way to Ekron.
