In the morning, the priests sent

guards to get Peter and John.

“I went to their cell,” the captain

said when he returned empty-handed.

“It was locked, and my men were on

duty. But no one was inside.”

“What do you mean, no one was

inside?” the high priest screamed.

“Sorry, sir,” the captain said slowly.

“The men … we put … in jail … last

night … are not there now.”

The priests all started

talking at the same time,

asking the same question:

How in the world did these

men get out of jail?

Just then, a soldier

barged into the room. “Your

Eminence, the men in

question are actually here,”

he said. “They’ve been in the

temple since daybreak.”

“Well, don’t just stand

there,” the high priest yelled.

“Bring them to us. NOW!”
