Chapter 9

Angela

I was relieved to discover this wasn’t his doing. It was strange; he looked guilty and even felt guilty, but he wasn’t guilty.

Marie quickly lost whatever respect she had for him; she thought he was whipped. I was surprised she didn’t make that corny as hell whipping motion. Perhaps this was mostly a guy thing and not so much a girl thing.

Made sense, I guess.

There was an awkward silence, but it fortunately didn’t last long. Lil’ Marie’s phone interrupted it; she had received a text.

“It’s Kiki,” she said, without looking up from the screen. “She wants the address.”

Shawn hesitated. He wasn’t too sure about this. One gangsta girl staying there seemed fair enough to him; now, he was worried his house was going to become the new Destina hang-out.

His grandfather would be rolling over in his grave. His thought, not mine.

“Don’t worry, Shawn,” I said, hoping this would comfort him enough. “Nothing’s gonna happen. They like you, remember?”

“Twenty-seven Crenshaw Street,” he reluctantly blurted out. She immediately typed it and sent it off.

I hated forcing him into this, but it’d be in our favor to have them here even if it was for just a little while. I mean, we honestly should have invited them sooner.

“They’re on their way,” Lil’ Marie announced, shutting the phone off for the time being.

“They are?” he asked. “Already?”

She grinned, clearly enjoying his nervousness. He could wave bye-bye to his comfort zone. Wow! She thought this was great. I never realized she had such a mean streak to her; she never seemed it.

“Yup,” she gladly responded.

“Why?” he continued.

“She didn’t say, but it probably has something to do with either the Rivers Street Girlz or the boys.”

“The cops?” he asked, too nervous to be impressed with himself.

“Yeah,” she said. “The boys

He was definitely regretting his decision now. No good could come of either of these scenarios.

“Don’t worry,” I repeated, taking his hand in mine. I wasn’t sure why I did this; it was something a girlfriend normally did. Lil’ Marie noticed and then smirked, so I quickly let go of it, which probably didn’t help my case any.

What was that all about? This was an earthly desire, wasn’t it? I wasn’t supposed to have those anymore; Michael said so. Or did he say I shouldn’t have those anymore? I was definitely confused.

Come to think of it, though, I was a little jealous when I walked in on them. I didn’t think anything of it at the time.

I had definitely surprised Shawn as well with this gesture. He quickly wrote it off, though, reminding himself I couldn’t have been acting on an earthly desire because I didn’t get those anymore. Phew! That was a close one. I thought I left myself wide open there, and he didn’t capitalize.

I wish I could have said the same for her, but I found her eyeing me suspiciously as a result. She knew. He didn’t notice her stare, I don’t think. Unfortunately, his mind was back on my apparent PDA.

“Well, we should all head downstairs,” I interrupted, before he had the chance to read too far into it.
