THE POEM

FIRST THERE’S A SOUND

a familiar and distant

Sound

out of the twelfth Century

out of Granada or Lucena

then

less than one

Second

later

there’s a Rhythm

like a solitary Drum

upon a tall Mountain

beating for the Leaves and Branches

at Times subtle

at Times noisy and unbearable

it’s then Words arrive

one Line, sometimes two

As they are written

Words begin to flow

as if they’d been lying in Wait

for the opening of the Door

at Times

it’s only one Poem

mostly

Hundreds of them

waiting

for me to write them

no matter how often I tell them

Readers are growing scarce

they shout at me

trying to convince me

requesting and begging

but I have to choose

which I write

and which I leave.
