Joey told his friends, the former KA boys, about what Perry Doyle said to his father, exaggerating the detail, saying that Perry said bad things about spics and—he looked at Walter—and niggers—and Kurt—and Flips—and white trailer trash, too, he told George. George, who had been waiting years for the chance to fight, bunched his hands into fists, and his face got redder. “Let’s kill those honkies,” he said.

“They actually knew I was Filipino?” asked Kurt. “I’m impressed.”

“Actually, they said Chinks,” Joey said, “but I knew what they meant.”

“Those assholes!” Kurt said.

Joey got them excited about the gang again, but only for a while, as everyone started to go back to their own lives, so to encourage them more, he figured they needed a victory, something that would make them proud to be KA. He needed to make them want KA, but he couldn’t have planned what happened next.
