Fluffy looked around with wide eyes. “So, how are we going to stop this bear?”

For the last twenty minutes, Christopher the bear had been following us. He’d growl and knock over trees to try to make us run. When a giant bear was chasing you, playing scared and running back to the village wasn’t hard to fake. The village came into sight, and I slowed to a jog.

“I’m going to hide. You shoot fireballs at him.” My plan was simplicity at its best.

Fluffy glared at me. “Hey, that’s not very heroic. Leaving your best friend hanging out to dry.”

“Trust me. Everything will be okay.”

Fluffy didn’t look so sure. “If I get turned into bear poop, you’d better never rename our Madden team.”

“I never would.” I grinned at her. “Try not to get eaten, though.”

Fluffy took off down the path. “Trust me, not turning into a bear biscuit is my top priority.”

My imp blasted fireballs into the woods at random. After a particularly long stream of magic, there was a yip of pain, and the bear charged. He ran directly through one of the trees on his way to destroy Fluffy. The singed fur on the right side of his butt was probably the reason.

The bear looked like he came straight out of the movie The Great Outdoors.

“It’s not worth it!” Fluffy screamed as she zipped past.

The bear lumbered toward my hiding spot, chasing the imp. The ground shook beneath my feet as I palmed a handful of the herbs Juanita had given me. As the bear reached me, I leaped out using my vampiric speed. I grabbed the fur on the side of his face with one hand, shoved the herbs at his muzzle, and let go.

The steel breastplate I’d acquired when we entered the game clanked as I rolled down the path. When the world finally stopped spinning, I was on my back with the blue sky above. I snatched a few deep breaths and pushed back to my feet. The first order of business was to locate the bear. I spotted him forty feet down the path, sneezing.

When his nose cleared, the bear whirled toward me. His eyes glowed red with rage.

Fuck.

Had the witch screwed us over for giggles?

I glanced at my belt and realized I’d dosed the bear with the witch juice herbs instead of the ones Juanita had given me. The witch juice had an effect on the bear, only not the kind I was looking for.

Christopher dug his back paws into the ground and charged.

If I was a normal human, there might have been an accident brewing in my pants. Luckily, I wasn’t.

I snagged a handful of the right herbs, braced my stance, and waited for Christopher to do the hard work. The bear bore down on me with murderous intent. Things started to slow down as I moved at vampire speed. I darted forward and tossed the herbs into the air.

“Mission accomplished,” I crowed before a massive pain hit the center of my chest.

Flying was overrated.
