The Book of the Dead

The Book of the Dead was a true book that existed. It was a book of scripts left for the dead. It contained magical spells that would guide spirits through the afterlife since the journey could be a most difficult one to navigate.

Like many stories of the dead reaching a point of rest, the Egyptians believed that there was a river the spirit would have to cross. It was a wide river. The journey across the river would end at a gate, where the spirits would pass through. The gate was guarded by monsters.

Upon entering from the gate, the deceased person would be in the Hall of Two Truths where they would be judged by the appropriate god and goddess. The person would have to stand trial in court, where they were accused of 42 different crimes. The person would need to answer to these charges by using his heart on one scale and a feather on the other.

If the heart was lighter than the feather the person would move passed the hall of judgement and join the gods. If the heart was heavier than the feather, the person was filled with deceit. A monster would devour the heart leaving the person without personality or memory, and thus without a chance for eternal life.

The goal of all Egyptians was to gain eternal life, which also meant that their body had to be preserved to ensure they could live in this comfortable afterlife.
