Unlike other agents, cardiovascular and respiratory systems may be stimulated by ketamine. It is a powerful bronchodilator. It has a slow onset and a long duration of action (10–20 minutes). It can be given by several routes, including oral, rectal, or intramuscular, and it is suitable for use as a sole agent, for example in battlefield anaesthesia. Problems with dysphoria and hallucinations on emergence limit its use.

Mechanism of action of anaesthetic drugs

A very wide variety of agents will produce general anaesthesia. There are two approaches to understanding the action of anaesthetic drugs. First, the molecular basis: what effects do anaesthetic drugs have at the molecular level? Second, the anatomical basis: on which parts of the central nervous system (CNS) do anaesthetic drugs act?
