Chapter 30

When everyone left, walking through the doors of the funeral home, Kyle felt immense relief at having made it through the entire ordeal, though none of it had felt real to him. He walked outside and felt his heart give one solid thud in his chest when he saw a familiar white envelope taped to the windshield of his truck. He jerked his tie loose and sprinted toward the parking lot.

“Kyle!” Ray shouted.

Kyle’s shiny black shoes slid across the concrete, and he slammed up against the side of the vehicle, grabbing the paper and yanking it off of the glass. Once again, Kyle’s name was printed in neat script across the front. He stepped back and looked around—up and down the street—before he focused back on the envelope.

He ripped it open and pulled out a thick stack of photographs. His stomach flopped while he flipped through the pictures.

There was a photo of Kyle as he climbed into his new truck at his house. It was the outfit he’d worn the day he’d gotten a beer with Rodriguez.

There was a picture of Kyle carrying a case of beer from the gas station to his truck when he and Linkin had gone for wings.

The last one he looked at was of him, a shocking image,

sitting on JC’s porch, surrounded by his family and friends the day JC died. Someone had been watching him the day that JC died.

He shoved them back into the envelope and looked around again.

Ray came over. “What’re you doin’? What’s wrong?”

Kyle held out the envelope to him.

“Another one? What the hell? I think it’s time to start to really be gettin’ a little worried.”

He unbuttoned his jacket and used his index finger and his thumb to pinch a section of the fabric so he could look through all of the candid pictures before he focused on Kyle with a look of shock.

“Someone’s serious about this. Kyle, this is stalking. Like serious shit. Not good.”

“Yeah. Be nice to know who, or why.”

They looked around and searched for anyone who seemed out of place in the funeral home parking lot. Other than their small group clustered at the doors of the funeral home, they were alone.

The street and the gas station across the road seemed like things were business, as usual. Nothing looked strange. There were a couple of cars at the gas pumps. They watched an older woman exit the store and get into her car.

Kyle sighed.

“Want me to drop these off later and see if Kimber can get some prints from them?”

“I don’t know, Ray. Maybe.” Kyle narrowed his eyes and combed the street.

Ray nudged him. “Come on. Let’s get goin’. I’ll hold onto these.” Ray carefully tucked the envelope in the pocket in his jacket. “You still have the other ones, right?”

“Yeah.” Kyle nodded distractedly.

The group piled into their cars and drove in a caravan through town to Kyle’s house. Kyle, Linkin, and Kenzie rode together in the truck, followed closely by Ray, Jenn, and the twins in their minivan.
