CHAPTER 40

The phone rang at Max and Margot’s apartment at two o’clock in the morning. Margot jumped out of bed and ran to pick up the receiver. Max awoke and stood at her side.

“Allo,” she said.

“Who is it?” Max whispered. Margot didn’t answer him.

“Margot. It’s Mutti. I have good news. Trudy had the baby an hour ago. It’s a beautiful little girl. Rudy telephoned us a half hour ago. Your father and I are leaving right now. We’re on our way to the hospital.”

“Trudy had a little girl,” Margot said to Max. Then she spoke to Adelaide. “Max has to go to work, but I will be at the hospital first thing in the morning.”

Rudy and Ebert stood outside the nursery in their Nazi uniforms when Margot arrived. A few feet away, her mother stood beside Mattie. Margot walked over to Rudy and gave him a hug, “Congratulations!”

“Why, thank you,” he said, but she thought she heard a twinge of disappointment in his voice.

“Max will be here right after work.”

“Oh, good. Very good.”

Margot nodded. She wasn’t sure why he seemed so unhappy. After all, God had just given him a lovely baby girl. Maybe he’s not unhappy. Maybe he’s just tired. He’s probably been awake all night. Margot walked over and said hello to her mother and Mattie. Erik was holding his mother’s hand.

“That one right there is her,” Mattie said to Margot, pointing to one of the cribs. “Isn’t she pretty?” Mattie said.

“Yes, she is,” Margot agreed.

“Rudy, you should be so proud,” Mattie said, smiling.

Rudy nodded.

Less than a half hour later, everyone was permitted to enter Trudy’s room. “I’m glad that’s over.” She was exhausted.

Max was still in his uniform when he arrived later that day. He’d come directly from work. Although he made more money now, Margot liked it better when Max was a carpenter working for his father. But the purpose of his taking this position with the Nazi party was not to earn more money. It was to ensure good medical care for Erik. And when Margot thought about the sacrifices Max was willing to make for his family, she suddenly felt an overwhelming love for her husband. She walked over and kissed him. Then she left Erik with her parents and took Max to the nursery to show him Trudy’s new baby.

Later that evening, Heidi and Artur arrived with a small box of homemade cookies for Trudy. Everyone ate the cookies as they gathered in Trudy’s room. There was great excitement as the nurse brought the baby in. Adelaide was the first to hold her. Then, the rest of the family took turns holding the little girl whom Trudy had decided to call Luzie. Strangely, Rudy was the last.

“She really is precious,” Heidi said. “Don’t you think so, Artur?”

“Yes, she’s a beautiful baby.”

Rudy’s father had been dead for many years. And he never went to see his mother. But he called her to tell her about the baby. She only spoke to her son- and daughter-in-law for a few minutes before the call ended.
