Chapter 9

“Ohhh, what a beautiful morning!” Evah sang as she cleaned the pool; I was scrolling Instagram, having uploaded photos.

“I will never understand why you are always so happy in the morning. I’m in need of another coffee.”

“Here you go, Puss.” A cup was placed in front of me. Hmmm. It was like he was trying to sweeten me up.

“Thanks. You read my mind.” I showed my gratitude with a smile. He looked exceptionally gorgeous today. Hard not to stare.

“You’ll never guess what,” Evah said as she looked at her phone.

“What?”

“We’ve been tagged in a few posts by Trip Advisor. They’ve said we’re ‘one to watch’. This could really help.”

“It was your photos, Kaia. Good on you,” Maverick said to me, taking a sip of coffee. An acknowledging look passed between Evah and I.

“I suppose I should get grinding more. I’m going to create brochures.” Now I felt even more determined to make this place a success.

“I’m going to experiment some more with the drinks. Mave, would you be able to give me the budget for the next week please?” Huh, so she feels comfortable to give him a nickname now.

“Sure thing, Evie.” He handed her a few documents. Was I missing something? They seemed the best of friends. I suppose they had to get along for the business.

“What?” Evah was looking at me and I realised I had been staring.

“You two.” I mouthed at her.

“I know. He’s not a knob.” She mouthed back. We’d spent years together so it was easy to work out what each of us were saying. A telepathy thing, I suppose.

Evah worked out her plan while I continued to design the website. I wasn’t a pro but it wasn’t hard. “Perhaps we should get a staff photo. Show the customers who we are. We can have a bio page too.”

Maverick was deep in thought. “Of course. You have a smart head on you, Puss.” He smiled, the sort of smile that could break a million hearts. Mine being one.

“With the right marketing, we can run a great business. I just want to make my mark on this island.” The thought of having a load of money and living my dream sounded amazing.

“There’s nothing that can stop you. I want to help,” replied Maverick, sincereness in his voice. Maybe I needed to give this guy a break. Yes, we kissed and he left me without a proper explanation. I really couldn’t deny, the feelings were still there and they were going to get harder to ignore.

“You are a deep thinker, Puss.” Shit, how many times would I get caught out staring at him? Oops.

“Um, I’m just gonna—” I smiled sheepishly, baring a little too much of my teeth. I backed away slowly, making my exit awkwardly towards the kitchen. A cup of tea was needed.

“Good grief, you look flustered. Done some naughty stuff?” Evah giggled, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively.

“Get your mind out of the gutter, you!” I gently shoved her, receiving a swipe on the shoulder.

“I really wish you two would work out whatever has happened.
