Shane walked around Cevillaâs small kitchen as he waited for Lucyâs return. He could make his own sandwich. Better yet, he could drive to nearby Langdon or Barton and hit any fast-food restaurant he wanted. But he hadnât eaten fast food since heâd arrived in Birch Creek, and he wasnât about to break that streak now. Besides, he knew firsthand that Lucy Fisher made the best sandwiches.
He stopped in front of the kitchen window and watched as the rain continued to fall, heavier now than when heâd picked her up. When Noah mentioned he had to arrange for a taxi to pick up Lucy Fisher from Arbor Grove, Iowa, Shane jumped at the chance to see her again. He didnât even stop to ask Noah why Lucy, of all people, would be the one Cevilla asked to help her. Cevillaâs reasons didnât matter to him. He only cared that he would see Lucy again. Heâd thought he never would.
He turned at the sound of her entering the kitchen, her footfalls soft but recognizable. Theyâd worked on his house with her father for six months straight, starting inside on a cold and snowy January day. Heâd taken an extended leave from work, a plan his father hadnât been happy about. It wasnât the first time heâd disappointed him, and Shane knew it wouldnât be the last.
Lucy had replaced her head covering with a scarf and changed into a mint-green dress that accentuated her deep-set blue eyes. She was so pretty. Not in the glamorous way Jordan was, or even the sweet, fresh-faced way most Amish women were. No, Lucy had her own unique look about her, and when they first met after he bought that money pit of a renovation house, heâd had a hard time keeping his eyes off her.
But it wasnât long before he realized he was drawn to her not only because of her outward beauty. Unlike Jordanâand many of the women heâd known and associated with in his fast-paced New York lifeâshe was calm and steady, with an inner strength and independence he admired. Heâd quickly understood why her family depended on her so much, and sheâd carried the weight without complaint.
All that attraction had led to a lot of guilt, considering he was engaged to Jordan at the time. Not anymore. Now he could be around Lucy and fully enjoy her company without feeling guilty or ashamed. But that didnât mean he was free to pursue her. Or that he even deserved her.
Is that why he hadnât just come out and told her he and Jordan werenât together anymore?
âIs something wrong?â She looked down at her dress, the skin beneath her abundant freckles turning a light pink. She had freckles all over her face, not just on her cheeks and nose. They matched the dark red of her hair, and he knew she was self-conscious about them. She shouldnât be, though. The combination of those freckles, those eyes, and her beautiful hair was irresistible.
Resist. Resist.
âNo, you look fine.
