Chapter Nine

By the time the 4th of July came around that summer, Noah had learned the basics of making cheese. He'd done this all alone, by watching tutorials and reading articles about it online, without the help of anyone. If anything, he was determined not to ask for Filbert's help. He'd tried out a few various recipes and settled on one that was considered a basic Amish melting cheese. Even though he didn't totally understand what any of this meant, he focused on following directions. This particular cheese seemed to be the least complicated, and one that he could add other ingredients to without totally screwing up the consistency. He wanted to enter something in the cheese making contest that was different from what everyone else might do.

After that one night in bed with Filbert, they returned to their own separate twin beds and slept alone. Everything remained civil between them, but there seemed to be an underlying issue neither of them wanted to address. They began acting and reacting to each other with such care it often felt like work. Noah would get up to use the bathroom and he would stop and ask Filbert if he wanted to use it first as a courtesy. Filbert would reply quickly, as if he was going out of his way to please Noah, by stating he didn't mind waiting. At supper, they passed food around the table with the kind of cautious insincere pleasantries that older women who lunch often use. Things between them became so civil Noah often thought about yanking Filbert's Amish pants down around his knees and going down on him right in front of everyone in the farm market. Noah had never met anyone so difficult to read, or so closed off. It was as if Filbert had found a way to sail through life without showing any emotion whatsoever.

Noah hadn't been with a man since that night with Filbert, and it was keeping him up at night. He'd gone out to the gay bar a few times. He'd had a few chances to be with other men. He even ran into that guy…Frank…that Filbert didn't like very much a few times. However, he didn't actually hook up with anyone. It's not that he wasn't in the mood or he'd grown bored with men. The problem seemed to be that whenever he started to think about sex he couldn't stop thinking about Filbert. Of course he knew that was hopeless.

The farm market was closed for the 4th of July and Noah had made plans for the entire day. Sarah and Jacob weren't doing anything special, which didn't shock him. With their pinched expressions and tight-lipped attitudes, they never did anything special. Noah learned that some Amish people celebrate the 4th of July and others don't care much one way or the other. He wasn't sure what Filbert was doing that day because he hadn't asked. Even though he saw Filbert daily, and he communicated with him amicably, he stopped asking questions that would put him in any awkward situations.
