Throughout a year of visits by activist author Mercy Otis Warren to her husband, James, the paymaster at General George Washington’s headquarters at Watertown, Massachusetts, she collected ideas and historical events for inclusion in a history of the American Revolution. She compiled eyewitness reflections on the declining years of the colonies in the thirteen-hundred-page History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution, published in 1805. Her spirit of republicanism and states’ rights dismayed her friend John Adams, a backer of a strong central government. Adams stated to diplomat Elbridge Gerry of Marblehead that women should not write history.
