“Any chance we can stop for snacks? I’m starvin’!” Brooklyn asked about two hours into the road trip.

We still had another two hours to go, so a pitstop didn’t sound too bad. “Next exit, and I’ll pull off. We need gas, too,” I mentioned, glancing down at the gas needle real quick.

“You know, I haven’t thanked you.” I turned my head to steal a look at her, but she was staring out the window.

“Thank me for what?” Gripping the steering wheel with my left hand, I let my elbow rest on the door.

“For savin’ us yesterday. Here I was thinkin’ that I was her momma, that I would be able to protect her from everything. And I failed her yesterday.” Her voice dropped. I glimpsed a single tear rolling down her cheek from the corner of my eye as she looks at me. “So, Dante, I want to thank you for savin’ me and my baby girl yesterday. You showed me that I was foolish to think I could ever do this alone.”

She checked the backseat where Alice has been sleeping for the last hour. And then, she turned back to face the front. She wiped at her face.

“Do what alone, bee?” I wanted to touch her, hold her hand and reassure her that what happened yesterday could have happened to anyone. I wasn’t a superhero; I was just lucky.

“Parent. I’ve been doing almost all of it alone since she was born, so I figured I could leave, too—leave him and save my child from a life of cruelty. And then yesterday, I almost lost her.” She softly exhaled.

“Brooklyn,” I paused, trying to gather the right words to get through to her, “yesterday was a freak accident. It could have happened to anyone at any time. I am just so grateful that I was there to get you two out of the water. You are doing an amazing job of raisin’ that little girl, and taking her away from a place where she won’t grow up happy is savin’ her.”

She let out a soft cry. I desperately wanted to touch her. I needed to console her.

Reaching over the center console, I grabbed her trembling hand with my own and looped our fingers together. Squeezing her hand, I gently caressed the top of her hand with my thumb, wishing I could do more to show her that she wasn’t alone.

“You’re a good momma, Honeybee. Anyone with eyes can see that Alice is your entire world.”

“Until he finds me and takes her away.” She gulped on a cry. I couldn’t help but tighten my hand around the steering wheel. What in the hell was she running from?

“I won’t let him. I’ll keep you both safe.” Sniffling, she turned her whole body to face me.

“Why?” Her voice was soft, barely a whisper. “Why us?”

Because you’re everything I’ve ever dreamed of calling mine.
