Ariel drove into town, once again admiring the charming main street lined with quaint shops and bustling sidewalks now full of summer tourists. She dropped Katie at the beach, where she would be meeting Connor and some of her friends. Ariel asked Katie to text if she needed a ride home, and then her attention quickly shifted to the daunting task ahead of her at the town hall as she made the turns through unusually busy downtown traffic. She pulled onto the block surrounding the building and circled the lot several times. There was no empty parking space.

Of course, she thought. Looks like you’ve got parking problems yourself, Mayor. Heal thy own parking.

After waiting a few minutes, idling, and seeing no one exiting town hall to get into a car and leave, Ariel pulled out and drove down the street until she found an empty curbside slot. It was metered. She quickly fumbled through her purse for coins, but she came up empty.

She looked down the street and over her shoulder. This was the only available parking spot within reasonable distance. She slid into the parking space and dumped her purse out on the passenger seat, looking for any change to feed the device. If only the parking meter took old Kleenex, gum wrappers, and half-used sticks of lip balm. She sighed and left the car parked in the metered space, hoping she’d be quick enough to beat a traffic cop noticing her vehicle.

Weaving around the people on the sidewalk as she made her way back to town hall, Ariel heard someone calling her name.

"Ariel!" the male voice echoed down the sidewalk.

Ariel turned to see Dylan leaving a store and walking towards her. She felt a flutter in her chest. He was dressed casually, in khaki shorts and a sky-blue polo shirt; wraparound sunglasses hid his eyes. She was suddenly self-conscious about her overalls and boots.

"Dylan, hi. What are you doing here?" she said, trying to keep her cool.

Dylan smiled at her, his even, white teeth flashing in the bright daylight. "I just had some errands to run. I saw you walking by. I haven’t heard from you since our dinner the other night. Have you thought about what I asked you, about meeting up again?"

Ariel was a bit nonplussed. She had too much to think about right now. But she pushed her feelings aside and forced a smile. "I've been busy with the house, but I’m still thinking about it."

Dylan leaned in closer to her. "So, how about later tonight? I'm only going to be in town for a couple more days, and I'd love to see you again before I leave."

Ariel hesitated. She had so much going on right now. "I don't know," she said, hesitantly. "I have so much to do." And it was true—the pile-on of bad news today had her spinning, and she felt as if a giant countdown clock was hanging over her head.

Dylan looked at her and took off his sunglasses. His eyes were pleading and intense.
