Chapter Thirteen
FeelingsâPeri
Everything was different. The sun was setting, and I was riding on the back of a motorcycle with my arms around a beautiful woman whose kisses had rendered me speechless just a few hours ago. I wasnât even going to try to pretend that today didnât affect me. I was already emotionally spent, the last forty-eight hours a lot to process. My beautiful Amma was gay, or bi, or something that wasnât socially acceptable seventy-five years ago, and my heart broke for her. All this time. All this heartache.
Had she ever tried reaching out? Did she call Isabel when phones became common in households around the world? Obviously, Isabel has been in Italy at the family winery the whole time. Did Amma try googling when the internet and home computers became available? My parents had access to computers in college, so even twenty-five years ago they could have found one another. When I got home, I planned to rifle through all Ammaâs boxes. Iâd asked my mother to keep everything until I had a chance to look for a secret stack of letters, too.
âI donât know why the traffic is bad, so Iâm going to take a shortcut. Hang on,â Camila said over her shoulder.
I tightened my grip on her waist and smiled when she squeezed my forearm before she accelerated. I trusted her. She seemed just as excited to get back to the villa as I was. âI hope Bisnonna doesnât tell Mateo anything we donât know,â she said after I dropped off my rental car. âLetâs go.â I couldnât tell if she was excited that I was on the motorcycle with her again, or that we were going back to hear more of Isabelâs story. Probably both. The rumble of the engine sent a jolt through me. I was already humming at Camilaâs nearness. She was tucked between my legs, and even though there was a gap between us, her accelerations were jerking me closer to her. My sensitive core pressed against her ass. By the time we reached the villa, I hummed all over with the need to release. I slid off the seat with wobbly legs and straightened my jeans. âThanks for the ride. I appreciate it.â
âYouâre welcome.â
She took my helmet and strapped it to her bike. I excused myself for a moment to freshen up and give myself time to shake off the sexual tension. It would have taken too much time to go back to my room, which was on the other side of the villa, so I ducked into a small bathroom off the main hall and washed my hands and splashed cold water on my face.
âReady?â
I was embarrassed that Camila was waiting for me. âSorry. I was a little dusty from the trip.â
âI know what you mean. I want to take a quick shower, but Bisnonna will go to bed soon, and I want to sit down with her and Mateo before she retires for the night.â
âYour whole family is so nice to allow me to stay here.
