Savannah felt a blip in the warmth between her and Collin. He'd been happy, even while his grandpa had been razzing him.
But with her alone...
Maybe it was her.
"C'mon," she said with a bump of his shoulder. "You don't want to let this cake go to waste."
She cracked open one of the containers, and the sugary smell wafted to her nose. She waved the container in front of Collin.
"Fine," he said with a strained chuckle, "we share both."
"Ooh, good idea, smart guy."
He shook his head. "I'm not that smart," he mumbled.
What did that mean?
She held out a plastic fork, and he took it.
"Your grandpa sure seemed proud of you."
Collin took a bite of the cake and groaned.
"I know, right? It's decadent."
They spent several silent, companionable moments downing the slices of cake and then switched containers.
It was... intimate. Like something a couple would do. Her heart pounded. He was boyfriend material. She was sure of it.
He sucked the icing off of his fork. Tilted his head like he was really listening to her. "Have you told your mom the truth? About us?"
Her heart rose in her throat, choking off any further appetite. She stuck her fork in the box and closed it. "No."
He waited her out.
"Mom and I aren't close. We never have been. She's used to my parade of relationships." Why had she said that? Her face got hot. "It won't surprise her to come home from the honeymoon to learn our relationship is over."
Because her track record with relationships was depressing.
On the other hand, was it sad to keep looking for Mr. Right?
He was silent for a moment. "Is it because...? It's none of my business, but you mentioned that your father died when you were young. That must've been hard on you. Did your mom have to go back to work?"
"We had to eat. Needed a roof over our heads."
"Just because you understood doesn't mean you weren't lonely. Or scared. Were you?"
His guess was so close that it opened a very old wound, one that had scabbed over and re-scabbed over too many times to count.
She blinked at the sudden moisture in her eyes and pressed her chin into her shoulder, turning her face away from him.
"Hey." His voice was soft in the darkness. "I didn't mean to push. But if you ever need a friend to talk to..."
A friend.
The press of his shoulder into hers... He hadn't tried to cop a feel. Hadn't tried to rush into a kiss or even hold her hand. Sitting here beside him, she could believe that he wanted only friendship from her.
She stared across the parking lot. On the other side of the street, the silhouettes of several small houses reached down the block. Looking Back was a peaceful, tiny town. So different from the bustle she was used to in Dallas.
"I was eight when my mom had to go back to work," she said softly. "At first, she hired a babysitter to stay with me after school. Kelly would meet me at the sidewalk when the bus dropped me off.
