Chapter Fourteen

James

I sit on the couch next to Hannah thinking about what to tell her. The clock in the hallway ticks the minutes away, but no words come to me. I take a sip of my wine, stalling for time.

She’s right. It’s all pretty suspicious now that I think about it from her point of view. The last time she saw me, Dana and I were as happily in love as a couple in a rom-com. Now, I’m living alone on a mountainside with twin girls. I can’t believe she hasn’t pushed me further on the topic of Dana already. Locked doors and a missing wife – that can’t be comforting for a single woman who is trapped here with me for who knows how much longer.

I sneak a peek at her sitting next to me. She looks concerned, but not necessarily scared. She never has been one to let her imagination run away with her. Plenty of women would have run screaming from this house already, determined to climb over every tree and rockslide blocking their path down this mountain to get away from the boogey man starring in the stories they were telling themselves. I wonder what guesses she has made about what happened to Dana.

I take a deep breath and push myself to start talking. Just say something! Anything.

Hannah must sense my struggle. She’s being patient, but I know she isn’t going to sit here all night and wait for me to open my mouth. Right on cue, she gives me a gentle elbow and turns to look at me.

“So?” she prompts. “Locked doors, missing wife, what gives?”

“So,” I begin. “Dana and I got married, you know that much. We were living down in town, but when things with Hollis got too uncomfortable, we decided to build this house. When we found out she was pregnant, everything seemed so perfect. Imagine growing up here in the woods! We were so excited to have the girls here in our own special world.

“When the girls were born, everything was amazing. Well, after we hired the nanny and we both started sleeping again, that is.” I laugh ruefully.

“But then one evening not quite a year ago, Dana was meeting some friends for dinner. When she got to the switchback about a mile down the mountain, a drunk driver swerved onto her side of the road. The police estimate he was going about eighty miles an hour.”

I pause for a moment to collect myself, taking a deep steadying breath. I’ve never had to tell this story to anyone. They all read about it in the newspaper the next day.

“She was dead on impact.”

Hannah gasps and lays her hand on my arm. “James, oh my goodness. That is so sad. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”

“How would you? I’m sure the news didn’t travel all the way to Seattle. It was just a car accident after all. It crushed my whole world, but it’s not like it isn’t something that happens hundreds of times a day across the country.
