Scott

“I can’t reach her,” Scott said. “She’s not picking up.”

“It’s late,” Nina said. She switched the television off. “It’s not like there’s anything we can do, Scott. She’s an adult. It was her choice to get involved with a married man.”

“Fuuck!” He rubbed his face and leaned back into the sofa. He thought she’d got better, that Tammy had grown out of her ways. But there was no mistaking it. She was at it again. He sat back upright and reached for his phone.

“Now what are you doing?”

“Nina—” He brought up his contact list and scrolled through the names. The mounting stress was getting to him. “Look, just... you don’t understand.”

“Then help me understand! Tammy can do whatever she likes, and that includes getting involved with a married man. Let her make her own mistakes.”

He found Zoe’s number and hit the call button.

Nina got up from the sofa. “Scott, what are—”

He raised a hand, effectively shushing Nina, who then sighed heavily and walked out of the lounge. Scott knew she was upset, but he had more pressing matters to see to.

“Zoe? Hey, it’s Scott Russell, Tammy’s brother,” he said as soon as the call went through. It was clear from Zoe’s silence that she wasn’t happy to hear from him. “Listen, I know I’m the last person you wanna hear from right now.” It was his fault, after all. Zoe had confided in him, and he’d gone and spoken to Tammy about it.

“I’m at work right now, and I really can’t talk. I’m sorry, but I have to go.”

“No, wait! It’s actually about your work,” he said in a hurry. “I mean, sort of. There’s something you need to know.”

Silence.

“Tammy’s partner is Jonathan Matheson. The guy’s married and—”

“Scott, I already told you. I don’t want to get involved.”

“No, Zoe, you don’t understand. Jonathan Matheson is Tammy’s Johnny. The guy is in your ICU. Look, I know it sounds weird, but you gotta trust me on this.”

“Trust you? Like that time I confided in you?”

He drew a breath in and let it out. “I know, and I’m really sorry. But you don’t know Tammy.”

“Do you even know that she threatened to kill me? She seriously needs help.”

“I know she needs help. That’s exactly why I need you to hear me out. Tammy’s not well.” When Zoe sighed, Scott took it as permission to go ahead. “On the news this evening, the police were appealing for witnesses of a hit-and-run. They shared a photo of the victim. Zoe, it was Nathan Matheson.”

“And?”

“Nathan Matheson is Johnny—Tammy’s Johnny. Johnny is Jonathan Matheson.”

“And?”

Scott shook his head in frustration. How could he tell her everything he knew about his own sister in one phone call? “I know I might not be making a lot of sense to you right now, but you’re the only one who can help me. If I’m reading this right, this Matheson guy is not safe,” Scott said. “And neither is his wife.”

“What do you mean he isn’t safe?”

“Zoe, please, I need you to trust me.
