DEON AND I HAVEN’T SPOKEN ABOUT IT

But after the news reported a second girl being assaulted,

he kept asking me if I was okay as if he knew.

I lied.

I told him I didn’t know the second girl.

That I couldn’t believe this could happen to someone else,

not telling him the “someone” was me.

“I don’t know if I want to see him, Talia.”

Talia points to the door,

“Well, you better make up your mind now,

because he just walked in.”

DEON WALKS OVER TO US

and says,

“Hey, Mina. Hey, Talia.

How are you today?”

Talia tells him we’re okay

and asks him about some history assignment they have.

I keep my eyes glued to the table,

wishing I never left my room.

“Well, I guess I’ll see you both in school tomorrow.

Mina, cool if I text you later?

You’ve been on my mind a lot lately.”

I nod, eyes still on the table,

only looking up as he walks away.
